Group Project 4: Prototyping & Evaluation

Introduction

FundBites is a platform that we proposed for people in poverty to donate money, food, clean water, and clothing. Donating to the cause you care about not only benefits the charities themselves, it can deeply be rewarding for you too. Millions of people give to charity on a regular basis to support causes they believe in, as well as for the positive effect it has on their own lives. Users who intend to donate and are using apps that are less helpful need not worry as through this app we yearn to impose better interfaces to encourage donating. This app certainly fulfills most of the limitations found in other apps. Our apps are designed for three types of users: companies (marketing team), non-profit organizations, and students. We will do a prototype evaluation for our proposed application in this project.

For this project, our team has conducted the usability testing of our prototype. The equipment we have used are digital index cards, screen recorder and webcam. A total of 3 interviewers and 3 interviewees are involved in the usability testing of tasks, which are to do a one-time donation of RM20 to help flood victims and download the receipts (if needed for proof(s)), recruit volunteers for an organization, and share poverty news on any social platforms.

Testing for User 1 (Company) was handled by Amisha Nur Imani Binti Hasri.
Testing for User 2 (Student) was handled by Aliya Malika Sugimin.
Testing for User 3 (Non-profit organization) was handled by Natasya Nadhira Binti Ahmad Nazrain.

Briefing notes

For user 1, prepared by Amisha Nur Imani Binti Hasri

Assalamualaikum and hi, I am a student from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia currently conducting a user testing for my application called FundBites. May I have your name? I'm going to give you a short briefing on the purpose of our application. FundBites is a platform that we proposed for people in poverty to donate money, food, clean water, and clothing. FundBites focuses on fulfilling three main tasks which are to do a one-time donation of RM20 to help flood victims and download the receipts (if needed for proof(s)), recruit volunteers for an organization and share a news.

If you have any questions or are unsatisfied with the application, you may inform me. Note that we will be having a short interview session to share  your thoughts on how the applications worked and any ideas or suggestions to improve our application.

For user 2, prepared by Aliya Malika Sugimin

Assalamualaikum, I'm Aliya Malika Sugimin, currently I am a student of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. We'd like to test the application that we've created. It's called "FundBites." And first, may I ask your name? Well, I'll give you a quick review of our application here. FundBites is a platform that we proposed to help people in need donate money, food, clean water, and clothing. A RM20 one-time donation to flood victims, the downloading of the receipts if needed for verification and recruiting volunteers for an organization and sharing news are the major goals of FundBites.

So now I'm going to let you explore with our apps, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. You will provide feedback on our apps at the end of this session. Share your thoughts on how the applications worked for you. Please let me know if there is anything We can do better.

For user 3, prepared by Natasya Nadhira Binti Ahmad Nazrain

Assalamualaikum and good day. I am Natasya Nadhira, a 2nd year student from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. I would like to welcome you to the usability testing for our application. Before we start, I would like to give a simple briefing about our application.

We have made an application called FundBites which intends to help those in poverty by allowing donations of various basic needs to them such as food, water, clothing, and money. This app will allow users to easily contribute donations to their desired cause, allow them to share the news of certain posts, and allow users to recruit volunteers for their own charities as well.

I hope you already have a general idea of our application. May I have your consent to have your voice recorded? Thank you.

When doing the task, I would like to remind you if for whatever reason you are unable to complete the task or could not figure out how to complete the task, you should say “Terminate” loudly.

When you are carrying out the task, you should “Think Aloud”. This means that you should speak out loud what you are thinking when doing the task. For example, you may describe what you are doing at that moment and what are your thoughts while you are doing the task.

Testing with users

Task 1 - Make a donation

Make a RM20 donation for flood victims under the clothing category.

Task 2 - Recruit volunteers

Make an application to recruit online volunteers.

Task 3 - Share poverty news

Share any poverty news of your interest to your desired social media platforms.

Interview Sessions

Question 1: Based on your opinion, what do you think about our app?
Question 2: Is it easy or difficult to use? Why so?
Question 3: What would be the reasons you would or would not be using this app?
Question 4: Are there any features or suggestions that you would want to add to this app?

Observations and Findings

prepared by Tengku Nur Afiqah Binti Tengku Ahmad Munir

User 1: Company (Marketing Team)

Observations

Results of interview

Usability Problems

Possible Solutions

The user completed all tasks with no problem encountered. She also did not use the navigation bar.

The user finds the app easy to use and runs smoothly. She also said that the app is not crowded and user friendly. She suggested that an improvement could be made on the recruit button to be more visible.

Low consistency of recruit volunteer button design.

Use simple button design that shows users that it is clickable.

User 2: Student

Observations

Results of interview

Usability Problems

Possible Solutions

For task 1 and task 3, the student straightaway did the tasks easily as the interfaces were visible. For task 2, she easily found the volunteer page but was struggling to find the recruit application button and kept trying to click the volunteer button while also checking the navigation bar.

The user agrees that the language and symbols used are easy to understand but she also thinks that the design of the interfaces could be improved. She would also consider continuing using the app.

Low visibility of recruit volunteer button.

Use bold and bigger font for the recruit volunteer button.

User 3: Non-Profit Organization

Observations

Results of interview

Usability Problems

Possible Solutions

For task 1, user 3 did not have any problem while completing it and was also aware of the edit amount button. For task 2, the user was facing difficulty to find the recruit application button after he easily found the volunteer page. For task 3, he initially did not realize the news section on the bottom of the interface and tried to search for news to share in the activity section.

The user finds the app to be nicely designed as well as user friendly. He also felt no difficulty while using the app as it is very easy to use and the instruction is very straightforward. He also thought that the app is applicable to use for donation. He suggested for notification for recently published news so the users are aware and can share it.

Low consistency of news page button design.

Use a simple button that can direct users to the news page just like donate, volunteer, and activity buttons at the middle of the interface.
